How to Keep Sheets On Bed – 8 Simple Steps and Tips
Do you struggle with bed sheets not staying put? Do you wake up with sheets in the middle of the mattress? Here are some tips to resolve these headaches. We’ll start with a quick checklist. If everything checks out, a few tips using common items may keep your sheets tight and wrinkle free.
1. Verify the size of the bed sheet
These days, mattresses come in a lot more shapes, sizes, and depths. Getting the correct fitted bed sheets size that stay on the bed could get tricky.
Examine your mattress. Is it a California King, King, Queen, Full, or Twin size? Take off the sheets and look for the label on your mattress. Or, use the measuring tape and take careful notes. Check out this Wikipedia page for typical mattress size in the U.S. Make sure your sheet is the correct size for your mattress.
- Twin mattress: 38.5 x 74.5 in
- Twin XL: 38.5 x 79.5 in
- Full or Double: 53.5 x 74.5 in
- Queen: 60 x 79.5 in
- King: 76 x 79.5 in
- California King: 72 x 83.5 in

2. Put on the sheets the right way
Most of the time, the tag that’s sewn to your bed sheet is supposed to go on to the bottom right corner of your bed. You can now adjust the bed sheets accordingly before struggling with the orientation of the sheet.
If your room décor permits, pattern sheets are easier to put on since you know the patterns run a particular direction.
The corners against the headboard are usually the trickiest side to stretch a fitted sheet over. To simplify things, since it’s easier to stretch the bottom corners, put the top corners on the mattress first. Make sure the pockets sit deep enough on your mattress.
3. Fasten the sheet with sheet suspenders
If you have gone through the checklist above and are still having trouble with your silky smooth, plain color sheets, sheet suspenders may be an option. Typically, a pair of suspenders is used. These suspenders are designed to clip onto the corners of your fitted sheets. The straps will then run underneath the mattress, either in an ‘X’ or a cross pattern. In addition, short sheet clippers or fasteners designed for individual corners of the sheets are also available.
The unpleasant part of using the longer suspenders is that you will have to lift the mattress corner to achieve this. It may be challenging if your mattress is too thick or heavy. In comparison, the shorter clippers and fasteners may be easier to manage.
The following are two popular suspenders that may fit your needs.
If you have access to them, trouser suspenders work the same way. Clip one corner of your fitted sheet to one end of a pair of braces, and then clip the other end to the diagonally opposite bed sheet corner. Repeat with the second pair of braces and the remaining two corners. Make sure the braces are positioned on the underbelly of the mattress and not on top of it.
4. Secure with double-sided sticky tapes
After you put the fitted sheet onto the mattress, use the sticky tapes at the corners of the mattress. Place one side of sticky tape to the mattress and the other side to the corresponding bed sheet edge. This may cause stickiness since the sticky residue may not come out in the wash.
5. Apply non-slip rug corners
This option works along the same line as the double-sided tapes. Look for sections of non-slip rug undersides that are designed to grip the surface they’re on. Place these underneath your sheet on each corner of the mattress. These make it harder for the sheet to run away from the desired positions.
6. Try mattress protector or topper
If the bed sheets slip off the mattress, there’s too much room between the mattress and the bedsheet. Mattress protectors and mattress toppers create additional thickness to the mattress. With this added thickness, the fitted sheets that wrap around the protector or topper likely will be more secured to the mattress.
However, mattress protectors and toppers may create discomfort and heat (while sleeping). For those that are sensitive to heat, this option may create problems.
If you have extra bath towels or old clothing, you can also strategically fold them and place them under the mattress inside the corners of the sheets. The added layers function similarly to the mattress protector and topper. They will ‘stretch out’ the sheets more and prevent them from moving!
7. Use DIY (Do It Yourself) straps
Perhaps none of the options above works for you since they may not come cheap. If you are a crafty person, you can consider putting your skills to the test by making straps for the bedsheet. Just sew in some elastic straps into the corners of your fitted sheet. If you have access to a sewing machine, this will be an easy task.
8. Attach safety pins
If you want to have a quick fix, safety pins may do the trick if you can find them around the house. Rummage through the kitchen or utility drawers for a few safety pins and attach your sheet directly to your mattress. Make sure to pin with the pressure of the tugging sheet rather than against it. This prevents the pins from weakening and bending, thus rendering them less efficient. Also, note that night-time wriggling combined with safety pins may rip your sheets.
Summary
In summary, first, evaluate your situation by confirming your bed sheet is the right size for your mattress. Then, put the bed sheets on correctly and make sure the sheet pockets are securely in place. If you’ve verified these, consider using sheet suspenders, tapes, non-slip rug corners, mattress toppers, bath towels, or safety pins. For those that have sewing skills, sew elastic bands to the corners or the sheets!
We hope one of the suggestions above can help resolve your issue. We love to hear your comments.
